Defy Dementia on the Road

Defy Dementia on the Road (link to podcast) is an in-person and live-streamed event exploring modifiable risk factors for dementia and how everyone can enhance their brain health. The program features a dynamic panel discussion with leading experts and individuals with lived experience, followed by an interactive Q&A.

Open to everyone and free to attend, either in-person at the University Club, or online via livestream.

The main program will run from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., after which the virtual portion concludes.

Following the main panel discussion, in-person attendees are invited to stay and enjoy refreshments while exploring interactive demonstration booths showcasing practical resources and the latest innovations in aging and brain health from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.

This event is brought to Victoria by the Baycrest Academy for Research & Education, the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation and The Slaight Family Foundation, in partnership with the University of Victoria Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health, Island Health, and the Alzheimer Society of BC & Yukon. 

Co-Hosts:

Dr. Allison Sekuler – President and Chief Scientist at the Baycrest Academy for Research and Education and the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation, Sandra A. Rotman Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience, Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto and co-host of the Defy Dementia podcast.

Jay Ingram – Jay Ingram has more than 40 years of experience as an author, broadcaster and science communicator. He was a co-host of Discovery Channel’s science show, Daily Planet, for 16 years and was instrumental in shaping the program’s format.

Panelists include:

Dr. Alex Henri-Bhargava – Dr. Alex Henri-Bhargava is a behavioural neurologist and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at University of British Columbia based in Victoria, BC. His clinical practice and research focus on dementia, neurocognitive disorders and improving care for patients and families affected by cognitive impairment.

Dr. Stuart MacDonald – Dr. Stuart MacDonald is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Victoria and a principal investigator with the CARING Dementia Cluster. His research focuses on cognitive aging and the early identification and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease through community-engaged lifestyle interventions.

Dr. Mariko Sakamoto – Dr. Mariko Sakamoto is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria and founder of the Dementia Action Co-Lab. Her community-engaged research focuses on co-creating dementia-inclusive communities, reducing stigma and supporting the social inclusion and citizenship of people living with dementia and care partners.
